In 1999, Stone Temple Pilots returned from a hiatus to release their album No.4 with the song “Sour Girl”. The band infused psychedelic rock with their original heavier sound. The late singer Scott Weiland wrote this song to make amends with his first wife Janina Castaneda. In his autobiography Not Dead and Not for Sale, Weiland explains the collapse of his first marriage. The video features Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Cruel Intentions actress Sarah Michelle Gellar.
In the late 90s, electronic music had a mass mainstream presence with Fat Boy Slim, Crystal Method, and Daft Punk in heavy rotation. When electronic band Dirty Vegas released their self-titled album in 2000, their song “Days Go By” broke out when it was featured in a Mitsubishi Eclipse commercial. In 2007, Fall Out Boy sampled “Day Go By” for their song “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race”. Dirty Vegas received a Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording for “Days Go By”.
No Doubt’s “Hella Good” certainly makes you want to keep on dancing. “Hella Good” goes beyond their ska punk sound into an electronic dance beat. Their 2001 Rock Steady album was a pivotal record that peaked No Doubt’s music career. Stefani uses the Bay Area slang “Hella”, a nod to the fact that a good portion of the record was created and written in San Francisco with Toast Studios.
“Pillar of Grunge Music” Pearl Jam released their 1993 Vs. album with the song “Dissident”. The song reached #3 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks. Half of the album was recorded in Marin County and after the recording session, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder would sleep in his truck in San Francisco. The first time Pearl Jam performed “Dissident” was at Slim’s Café in San Francisco.
