Bytes, Bars, and Bands: The Origins of Coachella

Coachella 2017

Mike “No Name” Nelson and his friend San Francisco restauranteur Doug Dalton are bringing you the latest in tech, nightlife, and music in the Bay Area and beyond! Today, they’re talking about the origins of Coachella Music and Arts Festival, where music fans have been enjoying established and emerging artists alike since the 90s.

In 1993, bands were boycotting Ticketmaster for adding service charges to concert-goer purchases. To get around the ticket battle, Pearl Jam looked into creating their own ticketing company and alternative locations to perform. The Empire Polo Club in Indio was the perfect place…close enough to Los Angeles, but with enough space for a full crowd.

Nearly 25,000 fans showed up to the first concert, and the first two-day Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in October 1999 was born out of that initial success.

Listen for more on how Tibetan Freedom Concerts in Golden Gate Park, Steve Wozniak’s US Festival, and Woodstock came to be with the help from Jane’s Addiction and other musicians at the backbone.
