How does an innocent podcast about Netflix and DVD releases devolve into multiple arguments and end with a therapy session? Leave it to Alicia and I to gum things up. We start off with the best of intentions as Alicia reviews some of the DVD release highlights including: A Family Man, staring Gerad Butler (both Alicia and I confuse this with the 2001 Nicolas Cage movie, The Family Man, which Alicia proceeds to compare to Titanic…I’m sorry what?!), Killing Hasslehoff, Baywatch, and Alicias’ must see pick of the week My Cousin Rachel.
After a weird tangent about therapy dogs, I get sidetracked looking up celebrity smokers, and can I just say…shame on you Eva Longoria! I finally pull it together enough to review a stacked list of old school (if you consider early 2000’s old school) releases coming to Netflix this week, including three of my all-time favs: Amores Perros, City of God, and Requiem for a Dream. Pro tip: if you’re in the mood to get super depressed, watch all three back-to-back-to-back! They are all great films, just a couple of notches past heavy.
Amores Perros is the debut film from Alejandro Gonzales Innaritu, who went on to direct 21 Grams, Babel, and I am just discovering when looking up how to spell his name that he recently directed Birdman and The Revenant. I had no idea!
City of God is a fascinating, yet graphic look into the life of teens growing up in the ultra-violent slums of Rio de Janeiro. This is one to watch not just for the story and incredible acting, but also for the gorgeous cinematography.
Things get a little wonky while talking about Requiem for a Dream, as I question why Alicia never had interest in director Darren Arronofskys’ first film, Pi. This is where we end up off the rails and in the weeds. I glean some helpful insights into who I am as a person and end up signing up for Reiki on the spot. Movies can be therapeutic, and apparently, so can podcasts about movies.
Oh, and we review Narcos season 3. You should watch it.
