Alicia and I really sifted through a pile of trash this week to find the best new DVD and Netflix releases for you. On the DVD side, Alicia kicks it off with a review of The Big Sick starring Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan. Alicia and I both got a chance to interview Kumail and his wife Emily V. Gordon, who share writing credits on the film, but Alicia was the only one who actually got a chance to see the film. She calls it both “fun and funny,” and she highly recommends seeing this heartwarming true story of Kumail and Emily’s relationship as it blossomed out of near disaster when Emily fell into a week’s long coma.

Also out on DVD is The Bad Batch and The Hero. I saw The Bad Batch starring Jason Momoa, but I can’t remember much other than someone getting their legs cut off and a lot of dust, so if you’re into that kind of thing, knock yourself out! Neither one of us saw The Hero, but I do love Sam Elliot and Laura Prepon who star in the film, but I don’t think that will get me to sit through what looks like an absolute snooze-fest. On a side note, off-mic Alicia seemed to conquer that The Hero looked like it stunk to high heaven, then oddly reverses course and says she can’t wait to see it when we recorded the podcast. Not sure what to believe from her anymore.

In the world of Netflix, it’s a slow week for the entertainment juggernaut after weeks of releasing quality original content. Jerry Seinfeld releases his first Netflix Original with a documentary/stand-up special about his life before he hit it big called Jerry Before Seinfeld. Seems cool and all, but wake me up when Seinfeld the show comes to Netflix. The only other real thing of note coming to Netflix this week is the third season of Fuller House, but despite my childhood crush on D.J. Tanner on the original Full House, you couldn’t pay me to watch this. Well, you could, but you’d probably have to be pulling down eight figures to afford it.
