October already has an air of foreboding in the Bay Area, what with the Loma Prieta quake in 1989 and the Oakland Hills firestorm in 1991. And once again, we find ourselves reeling from news, unsure how to help, with smoke-filled skies and wrenching visual footage.
This Sunday on Acoustic Sunrise, I’ll include Death Cab for Cutie’s “Grapevine Fires,” as well as “Smoke and Ashes” by Tracy Chapman, and “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran.
But somber songs aside, here’s how you can positively help – and keep your assistance local. Fogheads can text the word KFOG to 77948 to donate to the Bay Area Fire Relief Fund via Red Cross Northern California and the United Way of Northern California. The KFOG team will also be at these locations over the weekend to collect goods and supplies to distribute locally. We’ve invited our advertising partners to match the funds we raise, too.
As Jack Johnson says, we’re “Better Together,” and Sheryl Crow’s version of “Lean on Me” and the Indigo Girls’ “Hammer and a Nail” will help put us in the frame of mind to come together for our Bay Area neighbors and make a meaningful contribution to recovery.
