Why you can expect to hear more from Kali Uchis after soaring debut album ‘Isolation’

Off Air with Arthur, the podcast where you can get the latest music from up-and-coming artists that need to be on your radar (to impress your friends and kids, if nothing else), is back. This week: Kali Uchis, Knox Fortune, and Beach House.

Kali Uchis

The 23-year-old Colombian-American singer has been making waves in the industry for a couple of years, she’s received attention recently with the release of her first full-length album Isolation. You may have been put onto  Kali by Gorillaz’s “She’s My Collar” off of their 2017 release Humanz, or caught her on tour with Leon Bridges back in 2015, or saw her at Outside Lands in 2017. Or maybe this is the first time you are hearing about her and your life will never be the same.

Her soulful, melancholy voice and lyrics have sparked comparisons to Amy Winehouse, though Uchis’ range of style sets her apart. Being able to switch from doo-wop to rock to funk to indie to pop all on the same record showcases her immense range that should only keep her star rising for years to come.

Knox Fortune

Kevin Rhomberg, a.k.a. Knox Fortune, is not your typical indie-pop singer. For years Rhomberg has been a silent force in the Chicago hip-hop scene, producing a number of songs for many of the rising stars in the genre. In 2016 Rhomberg began experimenting as a singer and landed a feature on Chance the Rappers’ album Coloring Book, which earned him a Grammy. By 2017 Rhomberg had released his first full length album Paradise, garnering him all sorts of attention and landing him a spot on the holy trinity of music festivals in 2018: Lollapalooza, Coachella, and Outside Lands. Now if only someone could get him to shave off his tiny mustache.

Beach House

Beach House is one of those bands that I should like but never really got into despite giving all of their albums thorough listens as they were released. I’m hoping that will change with their upcoming release early this May, because the lead single “Lemon Glow” has to be one of my top songs of the year so far. It’s moody, psychedelic, and slightly depressing but in a good way, if that’s possible.

It definitely makes you feel all the feels. Beach House will be in the Bay Area this summer for a run of two shows at The Fox in Oakland, and I definitely recommend being there to catch their lush, overly-dramatic stage show.
