San Francisco’s Conservatory of Flowers is lit.
On select nights from now through early January, a light and sound installation, “Night Bloom,” will inhabit the indoor gardens until later.
“We have this 139-year-old national landmark Victorian greenhouse, and it’s a shame that people don’t come here at night,” Conservatory director Matthew Stephens tells NBC Bay Area. “The crickets come out, the plants are still here, and so with Night Bloom, we figured we could activate the Conservatory for our local community in a way that has never really occurred before.”
Designer Austin Shapley had to work around the Conservatory’s diverse climates – with some rooms held at chilly alpine weather to 100% humidity – when it came to lighting equipment.
