Meet the Band: Saint Motel

You probably know Saint Motel, even if you don’t know them. The popularity of their 2015 disco pop anthem “My Type” helped land them performances on the main stage at Coachella last year, Bonnaroo in June, and their late night debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live. It’s the energetic horns and disco-vibes that have definitely gotten stuck in your head, and will be there for a while (in a good way).

The funky indie pop band began forming, oddly enough, in film school. Lead singer A/J Jackson and guitarist Aaron Sharp first met at Chapman University, and later found Dak Lerdamornpong (bass) and Greg Erwin (drums) in LA. The quartet began collaborating in 2009. They debuted with Voyeur and caught their big break two years later. Incredibly, it took one tweet from the head of BBC acclaiming My Type, and they were signed by German-British label Parlophone (famous for recording The Beatles). With the new label, Saint Motel released the My Type EP in 2014.

Their sophomore album, saintmotelevision, is set for release October 21, and the tour starts mid-September. But you don’t have to wait for the album to enjoy the single “Move”, or the 360-degree video that accompanies it. What’s a 360-degree video, you ask? Only a music video that allows you to toggle around within the scene to look up, down, and side to side. They also recently released the 360-degree visualizer for “You Can Be You”. Makes sense for previous film school kids, and it’s definitely a cool combination of expertise.

Have fun with the music and videos! Saint Motel certainly is.
