Stephen King’s novel ‘Gerald’s Game’ gets the Netflix treatment

Alicia and I are back with another edition of your New Release Roundup, reviewing the best (and worst) DVD and Netflix offerings of the week.

Alicia kicks off the podcast with a review of Transformers: The Last Knight, which we both hope will be the last in this series that has been consistently trash for years now. Next, it’s yet another shark movie, this time starring Mandy Moore in the forgettable 47 Meters Down. No one asked for this, but Hollywood seems to insist on continually finding ways to dissuade us from ever entering the ocean.

Lastly, Alicia fills us in on the forgotten Nicole Kidman movie  Queen of the Desert, a biography of Gertrude Bell. If you know who Gertrude Bell, is bonus points to you for being a more cultured individual than either Alicia or I. Judging by the paltry $2 million Queen of the Desert grossed at the box office, not too many people out there know who she is either.

On the Netflix side, Stephen King has one of his worst books turned into a Netflix Original film with Gerald’s Game, a flick that tells the story of a woman chained to a bed after her husband dies during a little bondage role-playing action. Not quite sure how you can turn this into a two-hour film, but hey, Stephen King is hot right now so I’m sure a ton of people will check this out. Outside of that, it’s a slow week for releases on Netflix as they gear up for a slew of new releases in October.

If you are looking for a good laugh though, I highly recommend the new stand-up special Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up For The First Time. Not only is his material hilarious, the concept behind the special is quite unique as the whole special is presented as if this is Rory’s first time ever doing stand-up and he is somewhat of an aloof ranter who just happens to fumble his way into comedy success on stage. In my opinion, it’s the best stand-up special on Netflix this year.
