I took two weeks off to visit family in the UK – 19 relatives in 13 days, in London, Cambridge, Edinburgh, the Cotswolds, Bath, Southampton, Brighton and Eastbourne! And all !?%$#!?@ broke loose back home.
We watched haplessly from afar as a waiter filled us in on the Vegas death toll, and asked how America can let these things happen. I answered, “It’s a cancer in our culture.”
Checking Facebook in the hotel room in London, my husband shouted out from the bed as I showered that Tom Petty had died, or maybe not; CBS had retracted.
And on the cool and breezy south coast of England came the news that Northern California was afire in tornadoes of flame; whole housing developments incinerated.
It was reminiscent of the time we flew to Italy – on November 9th last year – in shock and feeling so helpless and detached by distance. Heartfelt thanks to fellow jock Steve Rockwell for hosting Acoustic Sunrise under extraordinary circumstances. It’s funny: when times are sunny and bright, it’s nice to enjoy the light music, but when bad things happen, that’s when broadcasters need to be at their posts, sharing the vibe and digging out music that resonates and reassures. It’s really the tough times that bind us together most.
