Arthur here, back with another episode of Off Air featuring a couple super under the radar bands, and some new music from a band that was huge for a minute, then kind of fell back to earth, and is now back with a new sound.
Jimmy Whoo
I have not been this obsessed with an album for several months. The thing that sucks is that there is basically no information out there about this guy, but the music he is making is absolutely incredible! It’s dark, moody, and oddly danceable. I’d say it’s a splash electronic, a pinch of 80’s synth pop, and a dash of dark Italian disco. That may sound like an odd combo, but it all works together so well. The song featured in the podcast is Nite Eye and it has legit been on repeat all weekend. The production on this track is flawless and Jimmy’s choice of featured artists is spot on.This album has a strong chance of making it into my top 5 of 2017. Bonus points for the psychotic short film Jimmy Whoo put together to complement the album.
MGMT
So, like everyone else circa 2007, I was in love with MGMT after they dropped their major label debut Oracular Spectacular, though I had foolishly walked out of a private concert of theirs merely months before they took the world by storm with hits like Kids and Electric Feel (the story is in the podcast). Since then the duo put out a couple of albums that have been a bit disappointing in my mind, but I am definitely intrigued by their new directions they’re headed in. They recently dropped a new single “Little Dark Age” that is drenched in the tears of a thousand emo kids. The sound really works for them though, and you can totally see the Robert Smith influence on the band not only in their sound but also in the visuals for the video. It’ll be interesting to see if MGMT trades in their hipster roots for a darker/emo sound on their upcoming album.
